Biography for Marty Haugen

Marty Haugen is a liturgical composer, workshop presenter, performing and recording artist & author from Eagan, Minnesota.  He and his wife, Linda, have two adult children (Katrina & Matthew).  Currently Marty serves as composer-in-residence at Mayflower United Church of Christ in Minneapolis and serves as adjunct professor at United Theological Seminary in New Brighton, Minnesota.

For the past 25 years, Marty has presented hundreds of workshops and concerts across North and Central America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim.  He has over 30 recordings and more than 400 separate printed editions available through GIA Publications. He has a number of published mass settings for Roman Catholic communities, including Mass of Creation, and a number of communion settings for Lutheran congregations, including Unfailing Light (with Pastor Susan Briehl) and Now the Feast and Celebration.

Marty has served as an editor or consultant to a number of GIA hymnals and has been a contributor to hymnals or supplements for many denominational groups including the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America), United Methodists, the Mennonite Brethren, the United Church of Christ, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the United Church of Canada,  the Church of England, the Church of Scotland and Roman Catholic groups in Great Britain, Canada and Australia.

Biography for Susan Briehl

Susan Briehl, a Lutheran pastor for twenty-five years, has served in parish, campus, and retreat center settings. She is an associate with the Valparaiso Project on Education and Formation of People in Faith. and an affiliative faculty member at Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, where she has taught preaching and parish worship. Her publications include Come, Lord Jesus: Devotions for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany (Augsburg Fortress), Turn My Heart: A Sacred Journey from Brokenness to Healing (with Marty Haugen; GIA), and two chapters with her daughters, Mary Emily and Magdalena, in Way to Live: Christian Practices for Teens (Jossey Bass), as well as several hymn texts and an evening communion setting, Unfailing Light (GIA Publications). Susan lives in Spokane, Washington with her husband, Bishop Martin Wells.

Biography for Tony Alonso

Dubbed “the voice of a new generation in church music,” Tony Alonso is one of the most preeminent voices in contemporary liturgical music. Tony’s music reflects an understanding of the multicultural needs of the contemporary Church as well as a commitment to strong ritual music. In addition to five published collections of liturgical music with GIA Publications (Chicago, Illinois), Tony’s music appears in several compilations and hymnals throughout North America. Tony has shared his musical gifts as well as his love and knowledge of liturgy at several conferences and events across North America and Europe. In addition to his passion for sung prayer, Tony has a deep interest in engaging young people in the life and liturgy of the Church. He has authored several books on liturgy for youth and youth ministers with Saint Mary’s Press (Winona, Minnesota). A graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in choral conducting, Tony currently serves as the Director of Music for Campus Ministry at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.
